Once in a while you see something that makes you go "Hmmm... Really?" And often you see that something spread on the heals of some popular marketer or social gurus doing it themselves.
One of those type of things is this trend I've seen for a while now where someone on Facebook actually tells their friends, sorry.. I'm unfriending you. If you want to follow what I'm doing, you'll need to go over here and become a fan (providing a link to their Facebook fan page).
That might be ok for some people that are authorities and have super established themselves where their herd will go to the ends of the earth with them. But is that the right play for everyone? Or even those that do have a herd.. a tribe?
I understand there are a couple of reasons why.
1) It is very hard on Facebook to be friends with just your biz or marketing crowd. It's different than Twitter in that more of your friends and family will be on there. I can't tell you anyone I know offline that are on Twitter that I know about personally.. Unless it's for business...
But on Facebook. I tried keeping it all business at first a couple years ago - it didn't work. My family and friends found me.
And I couldn't just ignore them!
And then what happens is you continue doing what you've always done online; talk business, marketing, techy stuff, web building etc.. and your family and friends are like, huh??
But you still want to communicate with your customers, clients, members and prospects! But now you have to worry about sounding stupid to these others..
2) Some people have to worry about the 5000 limit.. but lets face it. Most of you reading this don't.. or won't for a while.
