| Affiliate Marketing |
Those that promote Affiliate Programs are considered Affiliates. Affiliate Marketing is using a wide variety of marketing methods to drive traffic and business to merchant's websites - in turn the affiliate gets credit for the conversion (sale) in the form of commissions or fees. |
| Affiliate Program |
Millions of merchants online have these programs which allows them to recruit and manage a sales force (like you and me), usually offering it free, to promote and sell their goods for them. In exchange for the sale, the affiliate gets a commission or some type of fee. It would be the same as a sales person offline selling insurance, real estate, Tupperware, electronics etc.. in exchange for a commission. |
| Algorithm |
This is a mathematical formula that search engines use to rank websites. It's based on a wide range of factors (e.g., popularity, age of site, keyword optimization and more). The search engine Google is said to have several hundred factors in their algorithm to rank websites in their results pages. |

| Cloaking (Links) |
All this is usually referring to is using a redirect to hide what the original link was. Redirects can be created using a script (e.g., GoTryThis) or you can create a redirect web page manually using PHP or other methods. This is a White Hat method; there's nothing wrong with doing it as long as you are doing anything else (like embedding links) naughty with it. Affiliates use them a lot so that someone can't change out their affiliate ID with their own and to simply create a cleaner, better looking link. |
| Cloaking (Web Pages) |
This is a way to trick Search Engine spiders. Generally how it works is you show one web page to the search engines and another to the normal visitors. You identify the type of visitor via a script of some kind. DON'T DO IT unless you want to risk getting banned. :) NOTE: This is different than link cloaking! |
| CPA - Cost Per Action |
This is a payment system (usually for affiliates) where you get paid when your traffic takes some kind of action. This can be simply filling out a form or signing up for a gift as an example. |
| CPC - Cost Per Click |
Paid advertising platforms like Google Adwords and Bing charge their advertisers a certain amount every time someone clicks on one of their ads. So they are charged 'per click' rather than a fee of some kind. This amount could be anywhere from a few pennies to several dollars. |
| CPM - Cost Per Thousand |
This refers to advertising platforms have an option to charge an advertiser per 1000 impressions. An impression is usually recorded each time a web page is loaded (visited) by new visitors. |
| CSS - Cascading Style Sheets |
It is a feature that is added to HTML that helps website developers and users have more control over fonts, colors, layout, etc.. |
| CTR - Click Through Rate |
It is the ratio of impressions shown to the number of clicks. It's often used in Pay Per Click Advertising (e.g., Google Adwords, Microsoft adCenter). The advertiser uses this ratio to determine the effectiveness an ad and keyword combination. |
| Google Adsense |
Google Adsense is a way for any website to display relevant Google ads anywhere on their web pages and earn money from clicks (the visitor only needs to click to get paid a few pennies or dollars). |
| Google Adwords |
Google Adwords is a way to advertise online. Your ads are seen in the Google Search Engine Results or on a network of other search engines and content based websites (via Adsense Units). You are charged per click. So it only costs you money if a visitor clicks on your ad and comes to your website (or for affiliate marketers, the website you are promoting and sending traffic to). |
| IBL - Inbound Link |
Website owners count these as any links from any other websites linking to their own site. They are literally inbound. |
