Keywords are the engine that drives our profits... and losses. If you have the right keywords, you can pour money into your coffers. The wrong ones you are just wasting bandwidth.
But beyond that, you have to be that guy or gal that is going to woo that personality (I like to think about every keyword or phrase having a personality behind it). You could have the most niched, buyer attracting, keyword in the world, but they don't get your vibe and leave instantly. Then again, you could have a luke warm, still shopping, kind of keyword and you display your colors and they fall right into your profit funnel.
See it takes two things here to tango.
>> Choosing Top Keywords - They matter.. and there are great keywords that brings in traffic - wallet out. And then there are bad, ugly keywords that attract visitors that are barely paying attention and under no circumstance will spend a dime - at least with you. (as a salesman I was always focused on making sure I was talking to the spender and decision maker in the family to close the sale.. here we find those by the keywords we choose)
>> Your Profit Mojo - You have to have a good system, pre-sell and funnel to attract, retain and pull that traffic along to a profitable action you desire.
Don't get stuck focusing only on one of those two things. Both are needed to do that profit tango.
You can have all the *targeted* traffic in the world and a poor way to deal with it and make it profitable. Then again, you can have just a little traffic and convert it like gangbusters!
It's going to be different with every niche how your profit situation pans out. There isn't a one size fits all thing. But working on both sides can make you more effective and provide you a better chance at success.
Learn how to do keyword research and optimize your content, pre-sells and/or sales pages to attract the money spenders. And work on what you do with them once you got them.
